Macmillan Acute Oncology Service

Macmillan Acute Oncology Service

Specialist Nurses in acute presentations of cancer and side effects of anti-cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy.

Two nurses check a health reading via medical equipment.

Healthcare provided

This is a nurse led service which works closely with local haematologists and palliative care teams, and the oncology team at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

We provide support to patients with a new diagnosis of cancer, and help them manage the complications of chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiotherapy.

Our specialist nurses teach generalist doctors and nurses at Barnsley Hospital, and provide updates and information about the latest guidelines in anti-cancer treatments for acute presentations.

We also ensure rapid treatment of Suspected Neutropenic Sepsis, and support and co-ordinate investigations for suspected Metastatic Cord Compression.
