Artificial Rupture of Membranes (ARM)

Artificial Rupture of Membranes (ARM)

Artificial Rupture of Membranes (ARM) is the name of the procedure used to break your waters.

This method can be used to start or speed up your labour.

Your midwife or doctor will perform a vaginal examination and use a small instrument which makes a hole in the membrane around the baby to release (break) the waters. It will not cause any harm to your baby, but may be uncomfortable.
