Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

We know some some PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software.

Some PDF documents produced after 23 September 2018 are designed to be printed documents so might not be fully accessible to screen reader software.

This includes:

  • the structure of the content is not always available to assistive technology, which makes the content difficult to understand and navigate for users of screen readers (Info and relationships 1.3.1)
  • the reading order of the content is not always logical, which means some content does not make sense when read out by text-to-speech software (Meaningful sequence 1.3.2)
  • images do not always have text alternatives, which means some content is not available when using text-to-speech software (Text alternatives 1.1.1).

We believe all PDFs and Word documents essential to providing our services have been made accessible, or have been replaced with accessible HTML pages.

Some videos embedded on our site are provided by third-parties  and might not include subtitles (Captions (Prerecorded) 1.2.2). All videos produced and published by Barnsley Hospital  include captions.

Disproportionate burden

Some documents on this website are provided in PDF format which might not be compliant with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard. We are committed to ensuring PDFs added to this website in future will be assessed for accessibility prior to publishing.

Documents have undergone an accessibility review in February 2025, and we are in the process of replacing around 200 PDFs. We estimate this task will be completed by the end of March 2025.

Some videos from third-party publishers shared on this website might not have closed captions included. Please let us know if you are unable to access any particular video so we can prioritise its review.

Content that's not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services. 
All new PDFs or Word documents we publish meet accessibility standards.

What we're doing to improve accessibility

Some documents we share on our website are documents designed for printing. These include our annual reports and Barnsley Hospital News.

We use online tools to perform a readability test and carry out basic accessibility checks when uploading new content to the website. We aim to conduct accessibility audits annually.
