Barnsley Community Diagnostic Centre Wins HEFMA Project of the Year Award
The Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) at Barnsley Glassworks, developed by Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in collaboration with Barnsley Facilities Services (BFS), has been awarded the prestigious title of “Project of the Year” at the annual red-carpet Healthcare Estates and Facilities Management Awards (HEFMA).
This recognition highlights the innovative design and successful implementation of the CDC, positioning it as a leading example of modern healthcare infrastructure and innovative diagnostics.
Diverging from the traditional institutional model, the CDC’s design prioritises a welcoming and contemporary ambiance, based in a brand-new modern retail space flooded with natural light streaming through full-height windows. The facility lends itself greatly to patient accessibility and was built based on the findings of 2020 NHS Diagnostics report by Professor Sir Mike Richards.
Despite facing a tight schedule due to a government-imposed deadline, the project team delivered outstanding results within a mere 14-week contract period. Their commendable efforts included the installation of intricate mechanical and electrical systems, as well as radiation protection measures.
The Community Diagnostic Centre continues to expand, and the second part of the project is to incorporate CT and MRI scanners. This will provide further diagnostic capacity away from the main hospital setting, providing improved service for the people of Barnsley.
Barnsley Hospital Deputy Chief Executive Bob Kirton said: “We are immensely proud of the Community Diagnostic Centre at the Glassworks, the project was complex in places, but the team worked together well and land the estate and this award is recognition of everyone’s hard work and pulling together”
BFS Managing Director Rob McCubbin added: “This recognition as ‘Project of the Year’ highlights the dedication, expertise, and collaborative efforts of all those involved in this ambitious and challenging program. We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of healthcare services by making them more accessible and this contributing to delivering better care and outcomes for the community.”
This achievement beat off an impressive field of notable competition. Other projects shortlisted were:
- Estates Hospitals of the Future Enabling Works Team and the Facilities/Quality Assurance Team (both from Leeds Teaching Hospitals)
- The Capital Projects Team from Oxford University Hospitals Trust,
- The Development RAAC Team from West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust.
These outstanding initiatives showcase the ongoing commitment of healthcare organisations and across NHS estates teams.
