Our Emergency Department is very busy right now and some people are experiencing long waits. If you do not require emergency care, please use an alternative such as 111 online.
The Trust also scored above average in every theme of the ‘NHS People Promise’ – this is the promise NHS colleagues make to work together to improve the experience of working in the NHS for everyone.
The survey - which covers acute and acute and community Trusts - involved staff answering a series of 118 questions about their experience of work, along with questions relating to employee engagement and morale.
Among positive highlights were above-average results for: Compassionate culture and leadership; equality, diversity and inclusion; raising concerns and having a voice that counts; health and safety; learning; flexible working and work life balance; working as a team; and staff engagement.
Dr Richard Jenkins, Chief Executive Officer of Barnsley Hospital, said some of Barnsley’s scores were the highest in the NHS. He noted that two results in particular stood out. These were that the Trust scored highest in the country for ‘people being enthusiastic about going to work,’ and for the fourth year running, the Trust being best in the country for line management.
Dr Jenkins said:
“What really matters is not just what the scores are, but how we will use them to take action to deliver further improvements to staff. The results show that Barnsley Hospital remains a great place to work, with strong staff engagement and advocacy. While we are performing well in many areas, we are committed to continuous improvement - ensuring every colleague feels heard, valued, and supported.
“Our focus on local action planning, further communication enhancements, and diversity and inclusion initiatives should help us create an even better workplace. Staff feedback is vital in shaping our future, and we encourage everyone to continue sharing their voices through future surveys and forums."
59 per cent of Barnsley Hospital employees completed the survey, 10 per cent better than the national median of 49 per cent. The survey findings are to be shared with hospital leads and line managers to inform action plans so the Trust can further improve.
Barnsley’s Director of People Steve Ned said:
"We’re incredibly grateful to all our staff who took the time to complete this year’s NHS Staff Survey. The response shows the highest number of staff ever have shared their views, giving us valuable insight into what it’s like to work at Barnsley Hospital. It’s fantastic to see that 69% of our staff would recommend the organisation as a place to work and receive care - an increase on previous years and a testament to our ongoing efforts to make this the best place to work.
“While we have much to celebrate, including improvements in staff well-being and workplace culture, we recognise there are areas to focus on, such as access to nutritious food and managing workload pressures. These results help us drive meaningful change, ensuring we continue to support our staff and provide the best possible care for our patients."
