Our Emergency Department is very busy right now and some people are experiencing long waits. If you do not require emergency care, please use an alternative such as 111 online.
First aired in 1954, the Barnsley Football Club broadcasts were conceived by dedicated volunteers eager to connect patients who were staying in Barnsley Hospital with the world outside. Over the years, it has become cherished by fans and volunteers alike, evolving with the times but maintaining its humble beginnings, making the best use of limited equipment and resources.
The current group of volunteer commentators boasts a combined 120 years of service, with several former volunteers going on to further careers in media and journalism. Their dedication and passion have been instrumental in keeping the broadcast alive and vibrant throughout seven decades.
Reflecting on this incredible journey and his fifty-one years as part of the commentary team, veteran volunteer Phil Hall said: “I’ve really enjoyed passing on my knowledge and love of Barnsley FC to patients in the hospital, and as a hospital volunteer and governor myself I know how much the commentary service is appreciated by patients and staff alike – it’s good to know that my commentary colleagues and I are helping to make a small difference to patients staying in Barnsley Hospital.”
Much has changed since 1954. That year saw Winston Churchill in office as Prime Minister, the NHS celebrating its 6th birthday, and football devoid of substitutes or yellow and red cards. It was also a World Cup year, hosted in Switzerland, featuring innovations like the first football boot with interchangeable studs, invented by Adi Dassler, who went on to found the Adidas sports brand. It was also the first-ever televised World Cup.
Looking ahead, the broadcast team aims to grow its listener base across the hospital and ensure patients are aware of the broadcast when there is a football fixture. As the new season kicks off on August 9 with Barnsley welcoming Mansfield Town to Oakwell, patients and listeners are encouraged to tune in via oakwellhospitalcommentaries.com or scan the QR code.
