Our safety reminders

Our hospital team is on hand to help, but prevention is key. We’ve compiled a checklist of top safety tips to keep your Bonfire Night worry-free:

  1. Keep It Natural: Avoid petrol or chemicals to light your bonfire. Stick with dry, natural materials for a safer burn.
  2. Secure the Sparklers: Store fireworks in a closed container, away from little hands. Bring them out one at a time for controlled fun.
  3. Instructions Matter: Read the fireworks’ instructions thoroughly—use a torch if it's dark to ensure you’re following every step correctly.
  4. Stay Smoke-Free: Avoid smoking near fireworks. Mixing sparks and smoke creates unnecessary risks.
  5. Stand Back: Always light fireworks at arm's length with a taper, then retreat to admire the show from a safe distance.
  6. One and Done: Once a firework is lit, don’t return to it. Prioritise safety over spectacle.
  7. No Pockets, No Throwing: Fireworks don’t belong in pockets, and throwing them is very dangerous. Handle with care.
  8. Sparkler Sense: Sparklers can be delightful but dangerous. Follow all safety instructions to keep the fun under control.
  9. Stay Sober: Alcohol and fireworks are a risky mix. Keep drinks on hold until after the sparks settle.
  10. Child Friendly Zones: For younger children, consider watching the fireworks from indoors, where they’re safe and comfortable.

Burn Basics: Act Fast with "Cool, Call, and Cover"

Despite best intentions, accidents can happen. Knowing how to respond to burns or scalds makes a world of difference. Here’s our quick guide:

  • Cool: Run cool tap water over the burn for at least 20 minutes, removing clothing or jewelry (unless stuck to the skin).
  • Call: Reach out to NHS 111 or your GP for initial guidance. In severe cases, dial 999 immediately.
  • Cover: Cover the burn loosely with cling film or a sterile, non-fluffy dressing. Keep the person warm as they wait for help.

Your well-being and that of your loved ones is our top priority this Bonfire Night. Let’s celebrate smartly and safely, making 2024 a night to remember for all the best reasons.
