Our Emergency Department is very busy right now and some people are experiencing long waits. If you do not require emergency care, please use an alternative such as 111 online.
What should I do to help my burn or scald to heal?
If needed you should take paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain relief. Try to keep your dressings clean and dry.
If fluid from the burn leaks through your dressing, please return to the Emergency Department for the dressing to be replaced.
When should I seek medical attention?
You should seek medical attention, if signs of infection develop (increasing pain, redness or swelling)
You may have been given an Emergency Department clinic appointment. It is important that you attend this, or contact us if you need to rearrange.
How should I care for my burn after the dressing is removed?
Your healing skin may get dry and itchy – you should use plenty of simple moisturiser regularly.
You should use a high factor sun protection cream on the area of skin. This is to protect new skin and help reduce scarring.
Will my burn leave a scar?
Most minor burns or scalds do not leave a scar.
Some deeper burns may scar but should fade with time.
