Maternity Bereavement Service

Our specialist Bereavement Midwives are trained to care for and support you and your family if you have sadly suffered the loss of a baby.

Our bereavement midwives are responsible for offering immediate and long-term emotional support, information, and practical guidance to anyone who:

  • Experiences miscarriage from 20 weeks
  • Experiences stillbirth or neonatal death
  • Has an ongoing pregnancy with a poor pregnancy prognosis
  • Chooses to have a termination of pregnancy due to fetal abnormalities
  • Has a subsequent pregnancy

A specialist Bereavement Midwife is someone who understands that the parents of a baby who has died will be faced with many difficult decisions. They can be someone consistent and experienced who you can relate to, who understands what needs to be done, and can explain all options and choices at a time of great difficulty and sadness. Families have a known person to contact whenever they have questions or requests, or simply want to talk.

Michelle and Ellie are our Bereavement Midwives. They work between Monday-Friday (varying hours).

Patient Information Leaflets

Our Bereavement Midwives have booklets with lots of useful information you will need to prepare for the birth of your baby and after your baby is born.

The booklets contain a list of useful contact numbers.  However, if you need further assistance or support, please do not hesitate to ask questions if you are unclear on any matter.  Our team will always be pleased to help.

Where will we be cared for?

We have a designated bereavement room on the Birthing Centre.  You can be cared for in this room antenatally (whilst still pregnant), and postnatally (after the birth of your baby). We cannot provide care in the bereavement room if you need more observations, or when you are in labour.

Your Midwife and Bereavement Midwife can support you and your partner with this, and you will be allocated another room on the Birthing Centre.

This will be individually assessed according to your needs. The Bereavement Room, is a comforting space you can spend time with each other and family.
