Our consultants treat a range of conditions, including facial injuries, head and neck cancers, salivary gland diseases, facial deformities, facial palsies, facial pain, facial skin lesions, impacted teeth, cysts and tumours of the jaws, as well as mouth ulcers and infections.
The specialty is unique; requiring a dual qualification in medicine and dentistry.
Maxillofacial surgeons frequently work alongside other specialists including orthodontists, oncologists, neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons and ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeons.
Referrals to the department are accepted from GPs, dentists and other hospital departments.
The department currently offers the below treatments:
- dentoalveolar surgery
- oral medical conditions
- facial deformity and orthognathic surgery
- facial palsy (weakness also known as Bell's palsy)
- trauma of the face, jaws, teeth and skin
- oral and facial cancers
- treatment of neck lumps
- salivary gland diseases
- facial pain
- jaw joint disorders.
- medically compromised patients requiring dental surgery
- dental implant and bone graft procedures

- head & neck oncology clinics
- minor surgical clinics
Emergency Cover
Emergency cover is provided for patients with acute emergencies affecting the face, head and neck including facial trauma at Barnsley Hospital:
Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm
Outside these hours and at weekends, emergency care is provided by the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield via a networked service.
