Children and Young People’s Diabetes Service
The Barnsley and Children’s Young Peoples Diabetes Specialist Team provides medical, nursing, dietetic and psychological care to over 150 children and young people (0 to 19 years of age) and their families who have Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Consultant Led clinics are held on a Friday morning for children up to the age of 16 years old and on a Monday evening for Young Adults (16 to 19 years old).

The Care of the Elderly Department at Barnsley Hospital offers multi-disciplinary specialist assessment as well as general care for older people.

Caring for patients with heart disease including angina, heart attacks, heart valve problems, arrhythmias, cardiomyopathies and congenital disorders.

Cancer Services support the specialist cancer teams across the Hospital.
Ultrasound
This is a test performed either by a radiologist (X-ray doctor) or sonographer (health professional specialising in ultrasound). Ultrasound is used to look at different organs within the body, such as the liver. Ultrasound can also be used to look at specific blood vessels, such as leg and arm veins for blood clots (deep vein thrombosis).
This is a safe examination and it is often used as a first line of investigation for many different clinical problems.
Upper Gastrointestinal and Laparoscopic Surgery
Two dedicated upper gastrointestinal (GI) and laparoscopic surgeons are supported by an upper GI nurse specialist from the upper GI and laparoscopic surgery team at Barnsley Hospital. The team is fully supported by three dedicated GI physicians and a radiologist with special interest in upper GI radiology.
Urgent Care Physiotherapy
The urgent care therapy team compromises of physiotherapists and occupational therapists who specialise in the assessment of patients with acute medical needs.
Breast Care Services
At the Breast Care Unit at Barnsley Hospital, we provide breast screening, breast clinics, and a range of healthcare support including breast surgery and reconstruction. Our department is located in the purple zone of the main hospital building.
Breast screening
Mammogram (Breast screening) is the name for a specialised x-ray of the breast which shows small details of the breast tissue that cannot be seen in any other way. Mammograms are carried out by Mammographers (female Radiographers or Assistant Practitioners that have been specially trained to perform this examination). Breast screening can also be described as breast imaging.
Blood tests (phlebotomy)
Phlebotomy is when someone uses a needle to take blood from a vein, usually in your arm. This can be used to diagnose a number of conditions and any blood taken will be sent to a laboratory.
The Outpatient Phlebotomy Department provides a service in the hospital Outpatients Phlebotomy Department and also at the Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) in The Glass Works in the town centre. This is an adult only service for people over the age of 16 years.

The aim and vision of our new service is to provide your diabetes care closer to home. The service is commissioned by Barnsley Clinical Commissioning Group to improve and enhance diabetes care for people in Barnsley.
